Seeing things from a new perspective

There has been a recent flurry of 'eye activity' in the Resolute London office, with several members of staff going for their first eye examination in years. However, out of the five Resoluters who have recently had their eyes checked, only one person had what would be considered a 'complete' eye examination.

This week, 7-13 March, is World Glaucoma Week and experts around the globe are joining forces to raise awareness of glaucoma and the importance of early, accurate diagnosis to halt progression of the disease. Glaucoma is the world's second leading cause of blindness and affects approximately 70 million people worldwide. In the developed world almost 50% of all glaucoma cases remain undiagnosed and this figure rises to a staggering 90% in developing countries.

So I ask myself, why do we often ignore letters from our optician reminding us our eye test is overdue? Why, when we visit the optician, do we not ensure we are given a full eye examination including a pressure and visual field test? By the time a person with glaucoma notices any vision loss they may have lost up to 40% of their sight, and the damage which has already occurred is irreversible.  I don't know about you, but for me this is a scary thought!

Early and accurate diagnosis of glaucoma can halt progression of the disease, and ultimately prevent blindness. I am now looking at the importance of eye health from a new perspective. The next time I receive a reminder from my optician for my eye check, rather than filing it in the bin I will make sure I book an appointment, and at that appointment ask for a full eye examination. I hope that anyone else reading this considers the same thing.
